Sharing groundwater expertise internationally - State Department taps UD’s Wunsch to attend South Asia Groundwater Forum

David Wunsch, the state geologist for Delaware and director of the Delaware Geological Survey, served as a special consultant for the U.S. State Department at the South Asia Groundwater Forum in Jaipur, India, June 1-3.

The meeting, hosted by the government of India, in partnership with the World Bank and the International Water Association, brought together regional government and non-government stakeholders and experts from water, agriculture, energy and environmental sectors.

Improving geospatial knowledge - Professors launch DelawareView to improve public access to remote sensing and geospatial data

Faculty members in the University of Delaware’s Department of Geography have launched the DelawareView (DEView) consortium to improve public access to remote sensing and geospatial data.

DEView is an affiliate member of AmericaView, a national network of remote sensing scientists and GIS scientists, funded by the U.S. Geological Survey, who support the use of Landsat and other public domain remotely sensed satellite data for research, education and technology transfer.

Coastal flood workshop - UD, organizations collaborate to improve Mid-Atlantic coastal resiliency

Sea-level rise, dissipating dunes and susceptibility to storm surges are a few of the factors that contribute to a vulnerable coast. A coast at risk means an increased potential for damage to coastal communities and ecosystems in the event of tropical systems, nor'easters or other damaging weather.

More than 40 experts representing state and federal agencies and regional universities gathered to discuss these and other important issues during the Coastal Flood Research, Modeling and Monitoring Workshop on Sept. 16.

John Callahan gave presentation at Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee annual meeting

John Callahan presented on several ongoing CEOE projects that focus on the monitoring of the tides and storm surge, such as from water level tide gages and satellite imagery, as well as on past data analysis and future forecasts. The presentation also included a live demonstration of the Delaware Coastal Flood Monitoring System. The operational and research-based projects are being jointly conducted by the Delaware Geological Survey, Delaware Sea Grant, the Delaware Environmental Observing System, the Delaware Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Center and the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Delaware Coastal Programs.

U.S. Rep. John Carney visited the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes to talk about the University’s ongoing coastal resiliency research and outreach in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) and administered programs as part of a weeklong climate change tour of Delaware.

Geological research initiatives - Public, private, academic partners gather for Delaware Geologic Research Symposium

-Public, private and academic partners came together on Tuesday, April 14, in the Rodney Room of the University of Delaware’s Perkins Student Center for the second biennial Delaware Geologic Research Symposium, hosted by the Delaware Geological Survey and the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.
Over 100 geological researchers, state representatives, industrial partners and University students and faculty shared and observed presentations on the latest geological research initiatives in Delaware, and what they mean for the state, its environment and its citizens.

Centralizing resources - Delaware Sea Grant researchers develop infrastructure to house flood, high water mark data

University of Delaware researchers in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment are developing a centralized database and website to capture flood data in an effort to better understand and document the extent and severity of flooding in Delaware. In particular, the research team is focusing on data related to high water marks (HWM), the maximum level reached by the sea at high tide, or by a lake or river at its highest stand.

Sand search - Delaware Geological Survey assessing sand availability for beach restoration planning

The Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) is identifying areas where sand is available to restore the state’s dunes and beaches following coastal storms through a new agreement with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

Housed at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, DGS will evaluate the state’s existing geologic and geophysical data to pinpoint sand resources for future needs.

Regional partners to focus on sea-level rise in Delaware

A new partnership of scientists and federal officials from Delaware to Virginia will take a regional look at sea-level rise and how best to prepare for the impacts, including shoreline loss and increased flooding from storms.
