Journal article "Hydrogeologic controls on groundwater discharge and nitrogen loads in a coastal watershed"

A recently released article “Hydrogeologic controls on groundwater discharge and nitrogen loads in a coastal watershed” by the Journal of Hydrology details the results of a joint groundwater simulation and water quality sampling study that focused on submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) to Indian River and Rehoboth Bays, part of Delaware Inland Bays.  The lead author is UD Department of Geological Sciences Ph.D. candidate C.J. Russoniello, and includes co-authors L.F. Konikow, K.D. Kroeger, C.F. Fernandez, H.A. Michael, and DGS staff member A.S. Andres.  Findings in this study confirm findings in DGS Report of Investigations No. 79 that today’s SGD originated as infiltrating rainfall decades earlier and miles inland. The long travel times have significant implications for water quality in the Inland Bays watershed in that it will require decades to flush existing contaminants from the aquifer.
